Our approach

The teaching of music develops children’s ability to listen and appreciate a wide variety of music and to make judgements about musical quality. They are encouraged to take an active role in performing music including in school assemblies and special performances shared with their families. As an academy we greatly value the contribution music makes to everyday life and strive to involve as many children as possible in musical activities. Year 1 classes are named "Skylarks" and "Nightingales", birds famous for their song, in order to reflect the focus during this year on developing singing skills.  Ark Byron organises visits from musicians in order to inspire interest and music making. Music specialist teachers join classes every fortnight to lead singing lessons and support the class teachers.  The result is a growing expertise and love of singing in Ark Byron exemplified by the Year 2/3/4 choir which sometimes sings in assemblies.  Our Year 3 and Year 4 pupils have weekly drumming lessons, using djembes, developing children's knowledge of rhythm and allowing them to enjoy community music making.
